Electra (Formerly BarnacleSat) Nano-Satellite Mission Architecure
Space Science Engineering Laboratory
Research Advisor: Dr. Dave Klumpar
Communications Subsystem Lead
Sept. 2004 - Dec. 2004

Electra is a cubesat class spacecraft modified to take advantage of a rocketpod form factor. RocketPod is an externally mounted deployment device designed to make use of vacant positions on many Expendable Launch Vehicle (ELV) housings. Electra will contain a spool of electrodynamic space tether which will be connected to the second stage of the Delta II booster of the launch vehicle. Dragging against the magnetic field of the Earth, Electra and her tether will pull the booster from orbit. Demonstrating at once the feasability of the RocketPod concept and the ability of a conductive tether to provide a simple but powerful drag.*

As the lead for the communications subsystem, I developed and delivered engineering designs to mission planners on a weekly basis.  In support of this, I directed the communications team of two undergraduates in their research activities.  This involved communicating my expectations and then securing and making available various resources to assist them in meeting these goals.
